About Dundee

Dundee is the fourth biggest city of Scotland.

The today's name comes from the Gaelic dun deagh, what means castle on the river Tay.Dundee was said to be built on the 'three Js': Jute, Jam and Journalism.The city was also famous for whaling. They had big industries for whale oil and jute manufacture. The whaling company delivered whale oil for the lamps of the town.Gradually Dundee developed to the worldwide biggest jute industry.As an outcome of this development Dundee grew up within 50 years from 35.000 to 130.000 inhabitants. After the Second World War the textile industry had a contraction of demand.

Today Dundee is a big modern city with shopping centers, parks, pedestrian areas and nice esplanades near the river Tay.
